Overthinking-Thinking About It!

Image
“Nothing will harm you as much as your thoughts unguarded.” –Mahatma Buddha My last blog got quite a positive response. Many people wrote to me saying that they were able to connect to it as they too tend to overthink and that it was good to know that they had company. So, what makes us over think in the first place- as far as I’ve experienced and understood life and observed people-yes, you got that right- STRESS is one of the most prominent causes of over thinking. Another major factor is the availability of too much of free time with nothing to engage one’s mind productively. Sometimes, it can be just the opposite- non availability of free time , too much to do every day can cause a different kind of over thinking. One of my dear friends wrote to me that she didn’t understand why over thinking was made to be such a monster these days- if Newton  had not indulged himself in over thinking when the apple fell on his head, we simply wouldn’t have the laws of gravi...

OVERTHINKING- BEND OF MIND!

Image
“To think too much is a disease”, said Fyodor Dostoyevsky  in Notes from Underground and the Double. There’s so much going on in this mind of mine- the BOOMBOX of OVERTHINKING - so many things I want to say- so many things I want to do…don’t know where to start, where to end! END? Is there ever an end? Even the moment that we die…life goes on… How to sort out one’s thoughts? How to make head or tail of life? Hamlet says- “To be or not to be”- I’m stuck at- ‘To think or not to think’! It’s become common knowledge these days that overthinking is bad, but where do you draw the line? What exactly is overthinking? How do you control it? Is it bad to have an intellectual bend of mind? Actually, do we even get to choose what kind of a mindset do we have? Don’t we all interpret things in our own ways, the way we are at the core? Don’t the same circumstances have different effects on different people? Had it been so easy to choose one’s bend of mind, wouldn’t all of us be the same? Wouldn...

Pop Goes the Experiment!

Image
As a high school student, biology was always my favourite subject. I had this firm belief that all humans were created alike and equal in every sense of the word. I had the conviction that if some new born babies from different backgrounds were kept in complete isolation from the outside world, brought up by one couple, for some years -they would all grow up to be exactly same human beings- the replicas of one another! I used to believe that we all are what we are only and only because of our upbringing! I was definitely going to conduct this experiment once I grew up! This sounds so naïve and funny now, doesn’t it? Gradually, the light of awareness started dawning on me- I came across the highly interesting science called genetics. Then I came to know about another wonderfully interesting science called psychology! It made my eyes open wide with intrigue!                          ...

My Foray into Blogging

Image
Whenever I sit to write my new blog, there’s a chaos in my mind- I want to write so many things, express so many thoughts- but I don’t know where to start. Let me start today with my foray into this world of blogging. Reading was a hobby introduced to me by one of my school friends when I was in 6 th grade. Before that I used to read comics and whatever magazines of my mother’s I could lay my hands on. Slowly, reading developed into a passion, and now I’ve got addicted to books so badly that I feel anxious when I’m on the verge of completing a book and don’t have the next one ready. Over the years I’ve read a plethora of books starting from Enid Blyton to Nancy Drew-Sherlock Holmes-Danielle Steele-Jeffery Archer-Ayn Rand, not to forget the classics like Pride and Prejudice, Great Expectations, Gone with the Wind and so on. Then I shifted to historical fiction to biographies and autobiographies to true accounts to non-fiction. Of course, magazines and newspapers have always b...

Realization Dawns!

This being my first blog about the big girl called- LIFE, I don’t know what to expect from it. Well, I seem to have drawn a simile here, we hardly know what to expect from life either. A few days ago, I watched the movie ‘Shakuntala Devi’ along with my daughter. No need to say that its simply awesome in all respects. What hit me hard was the fact that all our lives, i.e. once we become parents, we see our children as our extensions. We keep on comparing them with us, their personalities with our personalities, their lives with our lives and ironically- their future with our past and present. Its something like this conversation going on in my head,” I wasn’t good in studies in my childhood, my child better be good! I was never a lazy bum, I better not let her become a lazy bum! I was always a plump child, see how much weight I have gained now, I better not let my child put on weight!” so on and so forth. Quite often we compare our parenting style with that of our parents. D...
