OVERTHINKING- BEND OF MIND!

“To think too much is a disease”, said Fyodor Dostoyevsky in Notes from Underground and the Double.

There’s so much going on in this mind of mine- the BOOMBOX of OVERTHINKING- so many things I want to say- so many things I want to do…don’t know where to start, where to end!

END? Is there ever an end? Even the moment that we die…life goes on…

How to sort out one’s thoughts? How to make head or tail of life?

Hamlet says- “To be or not to be”- I’m stuck at- ‘To think or not to think’!

It’s become common knowledge these days that overthinking is bad, but where do you draw the line? What exactly is overthinking? How do you control it?

Is it bad to have an intellectual bend of mind? Actually, do we even get to choose what kind of a mindset do we have? Don’t we all interpret things in our own ways, the way we are at the core? Don’t the same circumstances have different effects on different people?

Had it been so easy to choose one’s bend of mind, wouldn’t all of us be the same? Wouldn’t all the survivors of the holocaust become as successful as Dr. Edith Eger or Dr. Viktor Frankl ? When I ask these questions, somewhere, in some corner of my mind, I know the answers. But still, I need to word my thoughts, to speak them out, or in this case- to type them out.

But still, it’s not completely impossible to change our bend of mind to some extent, to the extent of making our lives more livable, more peaceful, and more content.

In the words of Dr. Viktor Frankl,” It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us”.

Give this a good, deep thought- if you may😊- aren’t our sorrows reduced to a significant extent when we change our outlook towards life? When we start understanding it a little more deeply?

Here I would like to quote Dr. Edith Eger from her book The Choice, the section, ‘Healing’- talking about her association with Dr. Viktor Frankl, she says, “Through his mentorship and friendship, I discovered a purpose in my suffering, a sense of meaning that that helped me not only to come to peace with the past but also to emerge from my trials with something precious worth sharing: a path to freedom.”

Coming back to a person’s tendency to overthink- What do you do when you don’t have anyone to listen to your overthinking or worse still- if you have someone but you are not able to express your thoughts?

Simple- then you blog or micro blog!😀😁😉

At the end, to quote a few lines from an unknown author

The foolish fears of what may pass,

I cast them all away

Among the clover-scented grass,

Among the new-mown hay;

Among the hushing of the corn

Where drowsy poppies nod,

Where ill thoughts die and good are born,

Out in the fields with God.

P.S.- Mads, hope you get a couple of answers!

  5. This writing makes an excellent reading. For a while, mind gets lost, what to infer and how to control it.
What I find more plausible and achievable is to totally get involved in some good hobby so much that our mind remains focused Theron most of the time. It could be singing, playing a game , so on so forth.
For instance, I am so much focused on my routine of golf, if give a chance, I would play day and night

  8. This blog is a thought provoking enigma in itself. As I perused through the first paragraph, the series of contemplating and mind riveting questions augmented my curiosity to read further. You have picked quite an interesting and relatable subject pertaining to today's generation. I would like to add that this blog is an apt description of my constant state of mind. It speaks of the sheer brilliance and the coping mechanism of the human mind, as it tends to spiral into a maze of unnecessary thoughts and dilemmas. But, with a small dose of mindful thinking and retrospection, it resets back to a state of zen.

Tremendous job aunty! Your blog has inspired me to further unravel the wonders of the human psychology. To many, it may seem as a mundane subject, but I'm eager to read up more on this phenomenon.
